Named after Queen Victoria, the city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, became officially incorporated in 1862, though its roots date back to the 1700s. Upon the discovery of gold in the area in 1858, the city's population boomed, increasing from 300 to more than 5,000 in a matter of days. During the late 19th century,
